Crew Activities

Venturing Crew 65 [formerly known as High Adventure Explorer Post 947; Venturing Crew 947] officially began meeting again in July 2001. It took us a couple of months to get the crew together, elect officers, and figure out what we wanted to do as a crew. Our focus is on high adventure with emphasis on science.

In September, 2001 we dug for quartz crystals [focusing on the geology of the area] at the Fisher Mountain Mine near Mount Ida, Arkansas, hiked the trails of Hot Springs National Park and camped near Gulpha Gorge, Arkansas. Everyone that went on this trip came home with several nice quartz crystals. The guys hammered some pretty good sized clusters out of the rock, while the girls concentrated more on crystal points. On Sunday we hiked from Gulpha Gorge, over the mountain into Hot Springs for lunch and a bit of sightseeing, then we hiked back to Gulpha Gorge. Click here to look at a few pictures from the trip.

February, 2002; The Crew enjoyed a weekend of bouldering, climbing and hiking at Pinnacle Mountain, Arkansas and stationery camping at Maumelle State Park nearby.

April, 2002; Several Crew members hiked about 11 miles on the Wolf River Trail System, Memphis, TN.

June, 2002; The Crew backpacked about 13 miles in Big Hill Pond State Park, TN, spending the night at the Grassy Point Shelter.

March, 2003; The Crew backpacked/scrambled 35 miles along the Cumberland Plateau in Savage Gulf, Middle TN. We've had some great trips, but this one has been the best so far.

We have scrambled Pinnacle Mountain several times since the Crew began. We have also enjoyed the Wolf River Trail several times and recently got together for an afternoon of Tron (a frisbee game that is somewhat like a high-speed games of tag, using a frisbee as a shield and as a means of tagging the opponents.
